Blurb

Butch O’Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he’s the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world – to lose. He heart belongs to a female Vampire, an aristocratic beauty who’s way out of his league. If he can’t have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers. Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he’s found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him…

Review

The fourth book of the series by J. R. Ward, I have found to be by far the best of them all. The erotic scenes between Butch and Marissa are both tantalising, scary and altogether strange. The changes which occur in Butch add to the scandal and altogether this book brings out the real forbidden love fairytale.

Again with the addition of a lesser character which is described with more than just a letter for a name, I have found myself tolerating the parts of the story in which they interfere. I feel somehow disconnected with the most obvious plot that continues from one book to the next. However, I am beginning to see their importance the more I read. David and Xavier being two of their better characters!

The storylines twist with the additional emotions and actions of V is somewhat a curious one. Although he says that he isn’t bi-sexual or homosexual, yet he displays behaviours that raise too many questions. He also admits to strange sexual encounters with women. However, he doesn’t say anything about men and there is no indication of anything romantic between anyone else but V and Butch. But is there something deeper? Something that we can’t quite pinpoint just yet. Perhaps that will come through in the next novel.

Overall I have enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance or the Vampire genre. It has been an interesting ride with this series so far. Kudos to the author. I give the book a rating of 6/10 stars.
