Book Review: The Chosen by J. R. Ward (2017).

Review.

The story of Quinn, Blay and Layla has always been one of complications. But in this latest Novel I find that they seem to go out of their way to make everything become the worst case scenario to the point of stupidity. The whole argument that explodes to the point where Quinn pulls a gun on the mother of his children is utterly absurd. This seriously wouldn’t happen, in that the character itself just doesn’t seem capable. But that’s reality too isn’t it? Especially magnified in these characters, perhaps Quinn could be capable of murder against one that he loves if he believes there has been a threat to his young.

Quinn’s relationship with Layla is not the only one that needs thought however, as he manages to also make things difficult with Blay. Not to mention the discovery of what love can do to a pair of Vampires who find themselves bonded just as Layla and Xcor do.

My favourite part of the story however, is Layla finding her voice. After being the tearfully afraid subservient blood bag for the Brotherhood for so long, she finds her own courage and voice when it comes to defending her young and the Vampire she loves.

Over all I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in Vampires, especially when mixed with so HOT Romance. I give The Chosen, authored by J. R. Ward, a rating of 8/10 stars.

Book Review: Darkrise by M. L Spencer (2018).

Darkrise is the third book in the Rhenwars Saga (not including the prequel), and has been an exciting and action packed read. The story of Darien and the Rhen is one that is full of emotional turmoil and the will to survive in a world that is in mortal peril. M. L. Spencer has proved a fantastic author and delivered readers a fantastic novel with many story lines less than completed. (Does this mean there is more?!)

The story continues with Malikar and the Rhen about to embark on war, with Darien Lauchlin in an emotional tornado trying to determine a way to destroy an ancient curse as well as save all of his people. Quin embarks on an adventure to top all adventures to try and stop the annihilation of the Mage race. With him he drags the heroic Naia and sacrifices himself in a variety of ways to attempt victory. Kyel hasn’t been forgotten either, and after reviving Merien he plays his own part in the sticky situations the mages have gotten themselves into. Some with chains, some without, and some with pledges of loyalty to just about everyone, including ancient gods and the like.

The story lines have been unique throughout the series, and once a reader begins the journey set by some pretty awesome characters its hard to put it down. I have personally enjoyed it every step of the way and tried hard to not give anything away in my review as it is a genuinely great read and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. However some of the story lines didn’t feel complete in this book, which could mean that another is on the way.

Overall, I believe M. L. Spencer to be a fantastic author who ‘s writing is evolving into something unique and entertaining with each novel written. Darkrise is the best novel yet. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and has a little imagination, and I give it a rating of 9/10 stars.

Book Review: Blood of Dragon’s, By Robin Hobb (2013).

In the final novel of the Rain Wild Chronicles series, Robin Hobb has delivered an amazing ending. It may not be the ending many readers had hoped for. However, with many storyline incomplete but with a sense of finality all the same. A perfect way to allow room for future novels.

Many things happen in this book, though all, Sedric’s maturing and changing into a “good” person who isn’t influenced by an evil man determined to use him to his own ends. His relationship with Carson is one of friendship and honesty. The couple continue to grow stronger and as Carson teaches Sedric how to be more independent and able, it just seems to strengthen their relationship further. Finally Sedric is heard by someone, who actually cares about what is saying. He is held by gentleness and kindness. He is finally in a good place.

Another exciting storyline I enjoyed was that of Tintaglia’s fight to live. The book was impossible to put down at this stage, until I had found out what her fate would be. Even then it was difficult not to turn just one more page!

To my delight the story of Reyn, Malta, and Phron is also an incredible read. From birth, Phron struggles to live, and Malta and Reyn struggle along side their son looking to any means for help. This particular storyline is definitely one to tug at the heart strings.

One storyline that finds some kind of a justification and therefore ending is that of Alise and Hest. With Hest supposedly rescuing her and Sedric from some unfathomable fate, finally comes to a confrontation in front of all. This gives both Alise and Sedric the opportunity to tell Hest that they won’t let him continue to dominate them any longer. They wanted nothing to do with him. They face Hest together, Alise denouncing their marriage and Sedric proposing to testify on his unfaithfulness on her behalf. They have both suffered at his hand and now they had found lives away from Hest. Both had found love real love. And Hest learns that real love concours all. Not that it really matters once Kalo becomes up close and comfortable with Hest.

Finally, this book review just wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Thymara, Rapskal and Tats. There has been an ongoing love triangle between the trio throughout this series, and has remained a central storyline. Admittedly, the path which they follow, is much different from what I first envisioned. Thymara endures a variety of dilemma’s and manages to concur them all. But I doubt she would have been able to endure the numerous test without the support of “support” or in some cases “force” that guides and influences Thymara’s ultimate decision, made of her own free will at her own chosen time. Perhaps the best man does get the girl after all!

Overall I have absolutely loved the final novel of the fantastic Rain wild Chronicles series. It has been an adventurous ride from the first and Dragon Blood is no exception. In fact I feel it has been the most compelling of all, causing endless chapters to be read until satisfied I had gotten enough information to be able to close the book. I highly recommend any book authored by Robin Hobb, to even those only remotely interested in the fantasy genre. A chapter in and anyone would be hooked. I give this book a rating of 10/10 stars.

Book Review: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owen (2018).

Delia Owens’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” is an enthralling novel that may initially leave readers feeling perplexed with its non-linear structure and enigmatic plot. However, this confusion is a deliberate choice made by the author, adding another layer of intrigue to an already captivating story.

Set in the marshes of North Carolina, the novel follows the life of Kya Clark, a young girl who becomes known as the “Marsh Girl” to the locals. Abandoned by her family, Kya is left to fend for herself in the harsh and unforgiving wilderness. As the years go by, she develops a deep connection with the marsh, finding solace and companionship in its unique ecosystem.

Owens’ exquisite prose and vivid descriptions transport readers into the heart of the marsh, making it come alive with its sights, sounds, and smells. The author’s background as a wildlife scientist shines through as she expertly weaves in detailed observations of the natural world, immersing readers in the beauty and brutality of this unique environment.

The narrative alternates between Kya’s past and present, gradually unraveling the mysteries surrounding her life. The non-linear structure can be disorienting at times, as readers are left piecing together the puzzle of Kya’s journey. However, this confusion serves a purpose, mirroring Kya’s own experience of navigating a world that rejects and misunderstands her.

The characters in “Where the Crawdads Sing” are complex and multi-dimensional. Kya, in particular, is a compelling protagonist whose resilience and determination are inspiring. The supporting characters, such as Tate, Kya’s first friend, and Jumpin’ and Mabel, the kind-hearted couple who offer her assistance, bring depth and warmth to the story.

As the narrative unfolds, the book explores themes of isolation, prejudice, and the power of human connection. It delves into the complexities of love, loss, and the impact of societal judgments on individuals who do not fit the mold. Through Kya’s journey, readers are reminded of the indomitable spirit of the human soul and the strength that can be found in the most unlikely of places.

While “Where the Crawdads Sing” may leave readers feeling confused at times, it is important to embrace this confusion and allow it to guide you through the story. The enigmatic nature of the plot adds to its allure, leaving readers eagerly turning the pages to uncover the truth hidden within the marshland.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant novel that transports readers into a world of mystery and intrigue. Delia Owens’ exquisite prose, vivid descriptions, and complex characters make this a book worth exploring, despite any initial confusion. Embrace the journey and allow yourself to be captivated by the enigma of “Where the Crawdads Sing.” I give this book a rating of 7/10 stars.
